Bandra Worli Sea Link - What's your name?

What’s in a name? Well, it’s an identity!
And also a vote bank, a publicity stunt, a crime and our way to pay tribute to our freedom fighters and leaders. Even before the engineers got a chance to marvel and be proud of their creation we found a reason to fight.

How about naming every cable on the Bandra Worli Sea Link?

So what should we name this eye candy standing tall in the Arabian Sea? Hmm isn’t Bandra Worli Sea Link a name itself? Aren’t Mumbaikars already referring it as BWSL?

No! The ones we voted for don’t agree to this. So, which freedom fighter/leader gets credit this time? Should it be Veer Sawarkar, Gandhiji, Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Lokmanya Tilak, Rajiv Gandhi....?

I am sure they are all sitting in heaven with their fingers crossed, each one praying hard to clinch this landmark deal! Good luck dear departed souls! Your grandchildren don’t wish to disappoint you. We love you all. But I hope you understand our problem, we have so many of you and so little landmarks to name. The competition has intensified with cricketers, film stars and politicians joining the list. And c’mon! It’s not daily that we can build a BWSL! How about naming every cable on the Bandra Worli Sea Link? Would that please you? And if that doesn’t suffice we can surely build some speed breakers and name them after you!

By the way, I hope you made a note when we kicked some British names to accommodate Indira Chowk, Rajiv Gandhi chowk, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, CST and so many others. You proud of us!

Just a thought, what country do we belong to? India, Hindustan or Bharat?
Leaders, didn’t I just give you a new point to fight for? Oh and your fight gave me my first blog entry!!!

Both of us have a long way to go! Good luck!!!

  1. Raising a very interesting question. Sometimes I wonder if we will just keep debating (using a very mild term) over names all our lives. Delhi - Dill , Calcuta - Kolkata, Bombay - Mumbai, Madras - Chennai... why can't we engage our energies to do something worth naming?

Good first entry for a blog :) Just keep going!

    Good luck!

  2. Wish it would remain just what it is intended to be, "BWSL"!
